INTRODUCTION

This is a really exciting time for me. The reason I'm full of excitement is because I'm going to attempt to do something that I think is quite special: namely, adapt to the Powiull Sleep Schedule. For those of you who don't know what that is, please check out the following link - it will give you much needed context to this blog.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this blog is simple: its function is to document my adaptation, and provide a record to show that it's possible for any man or woman, with a little determination, a little planning, and a burning desire, to see this through.

THE PLAN

First I will start off by adjusting to the Dymaxion Sleep Schedule. Whilst adapting to this schedule, I will likely come across a nap where1) it feels like I slept significantly longer than 30 minutes and 2) I wake up naturally before my alarm sounds. When I reach this point, I will switch sleep schedules, and from then on adapt to the Powiull schedule.

Whilst on the Dymaxion schedule, I will nap at the following times: 1am, 7am, 1pm, 7pm. Each nap will have a maximum duration of 30 mins. This gives a total sleep time of 2 hours in every 24 hour cycle.

Whilst on the Powiull schedule, I will nap at the following times: 7am, 7pm. Each nap, will, again, have a maximum duration of 30 mins, giving a total sleep time of only 1 hour in every 24 hour cycle.

TO DO OR NOT TO DO...

Throughout the period of adaptation I will not:

  • ·         Sleep on a bed.
  • ·         Eat meat (I’m a pescetarian anyway so this is not hard for me)
  • ·         Drink alcohol (although again, I don’t drink, so this is not difficult)
  • ·         Eat a large meal 3 hours (or less) before my nap time.

On the other hand, I will endeavour to:
  • ·         Take my naps at the following times: 1am, 7am, 1pm and 7pm
  • ·         Repeat my statement of intent out loud, or in my mind, soon after waking and just before going to sleep.
  • ·         Employ my sister to help me out. (Thanks Sylvia, I really owe you). She’ll basically be trying to make sure that I’m awake at 1.30 am/pm and 7.30 am/pm.  Although she may not always be there (because she has a life) and so I need to form a habit where I:
  • ·        Immediately leave the premises upon awakening from my nap. (If I don't do this, I'll likely switch off the alarms and fall back to sleep again, semi-unconsciously).
  • ·        Use some activity which will help me to forget how tired I am and how crap I'm feeling. This activity for now will be…. playing video games!! I bought 7 video games earlier this week so that I will not be bored.
  • ·         Use cold water dousing and physical activity to help keep me awake when the sleep deprivation symptoms set in.
  • ·         Give you the complete, honest truth about my experience. There will be no lies, and no embellishments – just the ruthless truth.
WHO AM I?

For all of you out there who are dying to know more about the person actually doing this, I'm going to disappoint you. You see that picture on the right hand side of your screen? That's not actually me. In fact, it's Dustin Nguyen's artistic interpretation of the fictional character Bruce Wayne, otherwise known as Batman. And like Batman, I'd like to keep my true identity secret. Why? Well, firstly, to put it bluntly, I don't want the attention. Secondly, this blog isn't about me - it's about the Powiull schedule, and one person's struggle to adapt to it. Thirdly, um... I don't want the attention.

WHO INSPIRED THIS BLOG?

You have Nicholas Powiull himself to thank for that. He suggested I document my experience via a blog after my previous attempt to do this lasted 9 days. So if any good comes out of this, all thanks and praise be to Nicholas Powiull! Check out his awesome blog here.

LAST WORDS

I really do sincerely hope that this blog is useful to current and future adopters of this, and any other, polyphasic sleep schedule. This blog is for you people.

If this blog is to be useful, I figure at least two criteria must be satisfied:

  1. The documentation of my adaptation must be comprehensive (otherwise the blog is useless)
    and
  2. I must succeed in adapting to this schedule (how helpful is a failed adaptation attempt? Not very.)
To all those people I am directing this blog at, you have my word that I'll try my utmost to do both.

Anyway, enough talk. It's time to get to work.

  2. (I had to remove that first post, too many typos lol guess I should proof-read :P )

Very beautifully and elegantly written! I can tell you put a lot of time, thought, and energy into writing this, preparing it, and conducting such a bold attempt!

There have been others who have tried Powiull sleep, but in my humble opinion lacked the passion and drive to continue when the tremendous edge of pain comes in the process of adopting.

It's one thing to talk about this when rested, but quite another to proceed with it when the body is feeling extremely intense sensations of sleep deprivation.

Having said that, I feel that "Freedom Seeker" has what it takes! Namely he has:
    1. A plan in face of sleep deprivation and what happens when you are semi-conscious upon first waking up from a nap.
    2. A way to keep the mind busy and detracted from the fact that it only wants to sleep.
    3. The dedication and passion that one MUST have in order to carry them through and not oversleep.
    4. He tried this attempt for 9 days previously so he knows what he is in for, which helps! No surprises of what sleep deprivation feels like and what happens with the body and mind when facing it.
I could mention a few more, but this covers the important aspects.

I will be watching along as you write and commenting to encourage you. Which is another important aspect I feel, to have someone else who knows the passion it takes for one to attempt this fully know what they are getting themselves into!

In fact, I am going to give you some extra support too. I know I said I would write on my blog about this after you succeed (to announce the first person to adopt Powiull sleep with me, if such a point happens) but I am going to mention you before-hand and call all people who are interested in this to follow along and encourage you. http://consciousflex.blogspot.com/2011/10/powiull-sleep-why-do-i-mention-this.html

  4. Hey Batman, I am extremely interested in this as I am also planning to adopt to Powiull Sleep in the near future. So when are you going to begin? When can we expect the first entry? :-)

PS: Sorry to disappoint you but you already got the attention, at least mine!
